Our family trip to Cape Town was the perfect mix of big adventures gorgeous and yet relaxed moments for the everyone . The city instantly blew us away with how the massive mountains drop straight into the bright blue ocean. We wanted a holiday that kept everyone completely thrilled and engaged, and also allowing some of us to slow down and enjoy the incredible food and scenery—and Cape Town delivered exactly that.
We started our first morning by heading straight up Table Mountain. Stepping into the rotating cable car was a huge hit, giving us sweeping views of the city as we glided up the cliffside. Standing on the flat summit truly felt like being on top of the world. While I wanted to sit with a coffee and stare out at the endless Atlantic Ocean, others loved scrambling along the rocky pathways looking for little rock hyraxes. Instead of just taking the cable car back down, we decided to spice things up and booked a downhill monster scooter tour from the slopes of Signal Hill. Steering our own rugged, off-road scooters, the four of us raced down the dirt tracks together, laughing the whole way down into the colorful streets of Bo-Kaap.
Our base for the trip was the Protea Hotel by Marriott Cape Town Waterfront Breakwater Lodge. Staying there was incredibly convenient because it sits right on the edge of the V&A Waterfront, meaning we could walk everywhere without needing to worry about traffic or Uber. The hotel itself has a unique, historic character with beautiful stone walls, but inside it felt completely fresh and modern. A massive highlight for us was the hotel’s breakfast buffet every morning. The variety of food was absolutely incredible, offering everything from fresh fruits, pastries, and cheeses to a full hot station with made-to-order eggs. It truly had something for everyone, making it the perfect, stress-free fueling station before our busy days out.
The next day, we took a short drive out to the Constantia Valley, which completely stole our hearts. It is incredibly green, peaceful, and packed with stunning wine farms. We had originally planned to visit a local strawberry farm, but quickly discovered we had missed the season entirely. While we couldn’t do any berry picking, the day was salvaged beautifully as we spent a long, lazy afternoon at Groot Constantia and Buitenverwachting instead. While we sat outside under the giant oak trees enjoying crisp white wines and an incredible lunch, we had plenty of open lawn space to explore. It never felt stuffy or overly formal; it was just a beautiful, breezy afternoon where everyone got exactly what they wanted. Afterward, to burn off some energy, we drove over to Muizenberg Beach. Everyone donned wetsuits and took a private surfing lesson. Watching backdrop of those famous colorful beach huts was an absolute highlight for us.
Because Breakwater Lodge was just steps away, we spent a fantastic afternoon exploring the V&A Waterfront itself, jumping between high-end shopping boutiques and browsing local craft markets. The absolute highlight of our evening there was gathering with the locals outside near the amphitheatre to watch a live rugby match on the giant big screen. The outdoor atmosphere was electric, surrounded by passionate fans, cold drinks, and the cool harbor breeze, which had all four of us cheering along with the crowd before heading back to the hotel to freshen up for a spectacular waterfront dinner.
To keep the momentum going, we added an unexpected thrill to the itinerary by driving up the West Coast to the Atlantis Dunes the next day.The landscape there felt like a completely different world—just massive, blindingly white mountains of sand stretching as far as the eye could see. We spent an exhilarating couple of hours sandboarding and driving quad bikes over the massive peaks. Everyone absolutely loved the rush of sliding down the steep sand slopes, and looking back at the distant silhouette of Table Mountain from the top of the dunes was surreal.
We followed that excitement with a completely different kind of coastal relaxation the next afternoon, heading to Camps Bay for a prolonged lunch right on the vibrant beachfront strip. While we sipped cold drinks and watched the palm trees sway against the backdrop of the Twelve Apostles mountains, others soaked up the lively pavement culture.
To finish off the perfect day, we strolled over to Clifton 4th Beach. Tucked away from the wind by giant granite boulders, the white sand and turquoise water felt like paradise. We set up towels, watched the yachts bobbing on the horizon, and cheered on each other as we ran around on the soft sand.
We spent our final days exploring the wilder side of the coast. Driving along the cliff edges of Chapman’s Peak took our breath away around every single turn. In Simon’s Town, we split into pairs for a sea kayaking trip to see the penguins. Having three adults in our group worked out perfectly here two adults teamed up in one kayak, while the little one partnered with the third adult in another. Paddling through the clear water and watching penguins swim right alongside our boats was unforgettable.
We also made sure to walk along the wooden boardwalks of Boulders Beach right afterward to see the rest of the colony up close. Watching these quirky little birds waddle across the sand, sunbathe on the massive granite boulders, and surf effortlessly through the waves was pure joy. Everyone was completely captivated by how close we could get to them in their natural habitat.
It was the ultimate family getaway, blending effortless adult relaxation with memories that will be talked about for a while or even go back again
